From page one, I was hooked! Love the writing, the characters, the behind the scenes Hollywood insider stories with just enough tension, humor and wit to keep you fully engaged. I can't wait for the next book. Great writing!

Told in the first person by Travis McGee a flawed, irreverent, ex-Vietnam vet, and aspiring actor; the story unfolds through the eyes of a protagonist whose combative, unyielding honesty and strangely vulnerable view of the world keeps you in a constant state of anxiety as the story unfolds and the violence ratchets up. Travis McGee is a new anti-hero so graphically drawn you will think you’ve made a new friend by the end of this compelling and beautifully written novel.
It reeled me in from the beginning with a feel for the dangerous life-at-the-edge rough and tumble story. A witty, fast adventure thriller in what better setting than Los Angeles. Jim has the ear and eye for the place and the characters.
Being a San Francisco person, I’m partial to John Lescroart and Stephen Greenleaf as a rule. This book, which I’m not even sure how it ended up on my , is set in Bad Old Plastic Los Angeles, so I started it with some misgivings. It’s a little slow getting going, but the atmospherics and insights into what made part of La-La Land tick back in the 80's all ring true. By the middle of the book, when there’s a real head of steam going, I was not putting it down. A good read with an interesting/humorous central character, non-gratuitous but convincing violence and a dab of romance.
An excellent read. Possesses some of the verbal sophistication of Raymond Chandler, some of the brutality of Mickey Spillaine and James Ellroy. Dialogue that crackles with wit. A baby-boomer protagonist --- actor, Vietnam vet, reformed drug dealer --- who brings the crime novel genre into the present. A Los Angeles setting that's both contemporary and timeless. Strong characters, an extremely nasty villain, suspenseful situations, lots of violence, a smattering of sex. Highly recommended.
Fantastic book! Intelligent, witty thriller. The book has a catchy rhythm and is spot on with being written in the voice of the actor who stars in the book. The correlation of the characters appearance and actual actors adds credence to this fast paced novel. The perfect balance of suspense. Interesting descriptions of the emotions that an actor must draw from their experiences to portray a character. Anxious to see what this author comes up with next! Barb Watson
Like the main honcho in "Get Shorty"' Chaz Hudson is a Hollywood knight-errant, confronting corrupt power mongers and settling scores with wry humor and, when necessary, some well-tuned hits upside the head. Completing this milieu are damsels in distress, thugs of varying expertise and menace, and last but certainly not least the divine Ms Blossom, Chaz's once (and future?) inamorata.
Unlike Chili, thiugh, Chaz is a Tinsel Town lifer, an itinerant actor, for whom the stakes therefore are much higher, the ramifications of his actions on his very livelihood way more intense. IMO this only adds to the depth and range of his characterization.
The plot lines are expertly constructed, the action riveting, the insider view of filmdom's peccadilloes both entertaining and eye-popping.
In short, Houghton's opus is a winner and I look forward to Chaz Hudson's next adventure.
