Harry Pines lives in Hawaii in "a better lifestyle than you'd expect from a squared-up ex-con." He manages a beachfront apartment setup that he owns in partnership with his friend Muhammad Ali, a Chicago restaurateur.

Harry finds himself in jail before the case breaks, and under deadly assault from a pair of professional killers. Chicago Shiver ultimately takes Harry Pines to the pinnacle of Chicago political power. And there he finds the truth.

If you like characters like Travis McGee, Spencer, Lucas Davenport, Harry Bosch, Dave Robicheaux, Fletch....get ready to meet a new one and his name is Harry Pines.
I read both Harry Pines books back-to-back and I couldn't put them down. They have it all intrigue, great characters, excellent dialogue, plot, locale, pacing....from the first page they just hooked me and reeled me in.
I predict Terry Holland will be the next great crime-fiction-detective writer if he isn't already.

When a well-respected sportswriter is arrested for murder, Harry Pines travels to Chicago in response to a call from his partner and friend, Mohammed Ali, no not that one. Mohammed is known in Chicago as a man you can turn to when you need help, and Harry is the man Mohammed turns to when he need a little "private investigation" done.
It appears that a lot of evidence did not make it into the police files, which makes Harry more than a little suspicious and makes the job more complicated. He quickly pulls together enough evidence to establish reasonable doubt, but he wants Jack out now. Harry has spent time in prison and knows that every moment counts when you're doing time, so he presses to have Jack released immediately. Somebody is not pleased with his efforts, and soon Harry is struggling to keep himself out of jail and protect several lives while he tries to prove who is pulling whose strings. A fast-paced trail of danger, probable police corruption, and possible political maneuvering ensues until is it difficult to know where to turn.
A great cast of characters and a little romance round out this well written first-person novel of suspense.
The second Harry Pines novel is as good as the first. Very entertaining!
